You know all about Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, and Google+, even if you don’t necessarily have profiles on each of these platforms. However, there are thousands more . There are corners of the world where nobody uses Pinterest, and the most popular social media platform is something you’ve never heard of. Take a chance on a favorite from around the world. You might be surprised what you discover.

1. About.me

This is a personal hosting service which was founded in 2009 and has five million users. It’s where you can connect a number of online profiles from Facebook to Flickr, and it’s renowned for simplicity with easy one-page profiles. Enjoy an artistic background, short bio, and general cleanliness of a clutter-free site. It was bought by AOL in 2010, but then bought back a few years later.

2. delicious

With nearly nine million users, you’d think more Americans would have heard of this site. It’s a social bookmarking site helping users keep track of their favorite pages and profiles. Founded in 2003, then bought by Yahoo! in 2005, Science Inc. finally became the official owner. Tagging is popular as well as indexing, and it’s easy to get grouped together with others who share similar interests in a “Stack.”

3. Draugiem

This has been a popular site sine launching in 2004, and is the favorite of Latvia where there are 2.6 million users. It’s a key part of everyone’s life, much like Facebook in the US. It’s more popular than even email for regular communication. The Draugiem Group owns the site, as well as a number of other tech-related companies around the country.

4. douban

The ultimate social networking platform in China, douban was launched in 2005 and lets users create content based on recent events, local news, books, film and music. There’s even a douban radio station which comes in at number one in iOS app store downloads. Anyone registered or not can use it, which is probably why the site has over 53 million registered users. It caters to all Chinese residents, though it includes content from a variety of media outlets.

Forget Flickr—for millions of people, Fotki is where it’s at when it comes to photo and video sharing. You may not know it, but it’s one of the biggest social sites in the world, and features a number of “Web 2.0” touches like RSS feeds and AJAX. You can get unlimited storage, and it’s free if you’re in Estonia, Lithuania, Russia or Latvia. However, there’s much more than photos since blogging platforms, online printing, and even email is available.
