6 Ways to Promote Your Business With Pinterest Places

How Place Pins Work

Businesses now have two ways to associate their pins with a geographic location. In addition to rich pins, Pinterest introduced Pinterest place pins in November 2013.
Place pins use Foursquare‘s location API combined with Mapbox’s map technology. Plus, if a location you want to pin doesn’t show up, you can simply add it.
Brands can create a board to focus on places in a single city or country, or a board that focuses on similar places across the globe.

This tool is a dream come true for companies in the travel industry. Just check out Hotels.com‘s Hit the Slopes board of best places to ski, New York City: The Official Guide’s Free (and Almost Free) in NYC board and all of the #VXTraveler City Guides on Virgin America’s Pinterest page. Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts has a variety of place boards, showcasing everything from concierge suggestions to honeymoon destinations.
However, just about any company can think outside the box and come up with a creative way to use Pinterest place pins.
Outside Magazine created a board to share places across the United States that offer lots of outside recreation opportunities to their residents.
Use place pins not only for your locations, but to share other places that would be of interest to your followers.

How to Create a Pinterest Places Board

To get started, select Place Boards in the menu from the upper left-hand corner of your Pinterest profile.

The Place Boards option has been added to the main Pinterest menu.
From there, click on Create Board. As you fill in the fields, make sure you select the Add a Map option.

Be sure the Add a Map option has Yes next to it.
On the next page, start adding pins by clicking on Add a Place.

Place pin boards display with a map behind them.
This is where you assign a city location to your pin. Once you choose a city, your searches will return results for venues in that location. For example, Bonefish Grill has several locations across the nation, but only the Boise location showed up in my search.

Manage the location of your place pin by changing the city.
As you add place pins, you can change the city location at any time, which makes it easy to share multiple locations for the same vendor on one map.
Now that you know how to create a board for your place pins, let’s see how you can use them in everyday promotion efforts.

#1: Map Your Brick-and-Mortar Locations

How great would it be if people who found you on Pinterest knew exactly where your nearest location is?
Whether you have one location or a dozen, Pinterest place pins let you provide your customers with a visual guide to where they can find you.
Starbucks Coffee did a nice twist on this concept. They created a Store Design board and pinned the locations of their uniquely designed stores.

Create a Locations board to highlight your locations in one country or around the world. Whether you want to add a unique slant, as Starbucks did, is up to you.

#2: Pin Your Clients

Part of positioning your brand or business is pointing toward the clients you choose to work with.
When you display your current clients on a map with Pinterest place pins, it’s easy to see how far your geographic influence reaches. You can also provide a link back to their sites so potential clients can see the companies you work with and what they do.
Create a Client board to showcase both the quantity and quality of your current clients to anyone who’s thinking of working with you in the future.

#3: Pin Ideas for Your Clients/Customers

Another option is to create a board with tips for your clients based on where they’re located.
Simple Skincare created a places board called Winter Skincare Around the U.S. The board has skincare tips for different climates, and illustrates the best ways for the people in those regions to use their products.

If you can add tips for customers based on the place they live, that can raise your expertise level and the value of your brand.

#4: Introduce the Team

Every business is made up of employees who come together and work as a team. They provide the product or service that makes your business successful.
Pinterest place pins can help your customers to get to know your team as people.
Using place pins, map the hometowns of all of your employees, alongside their favorite restaurants or shops. Better yet, create a group board with all employees and let them pin their favorite places and spaces on their own. These insights give customers a glimpse of your team members’ personalities.
People like buying from people they trust. A board featuring employees helps customers get to know your team and build that relationship.

#5: Share Your Inspiration and Process

Every brand or business is inspired by something. Learning about that inspiration helps people identify with you.
Tundra Restaurant Supply in Boulder, Colorado created a places board to showcase their favorite places in their state, so the restaurants they work with could get to know them better.

Customers love transparency, and using Pinterest place pins to show them all of the ins and outs of your business makes them more likely to trust you.
Use Pinterest place pins to share the locations around the world that inspire your products or services. If you own a cafe, show customers where you get your coffee beans. If you run a Chinese restaurant, tell them where your dishes originate. If other businesses work with you to create your final product, pin them too.
You can also share your whole process from start to finish. This will encourage loyalty from current customers and attract new customers.

#6: Demonstrate Your Customer Reach With a Competition

No matter where you’re based, chances are that your products and services are used across the country or even around the world. Let your customers tell that story!
Encourage your customers to pin pictures of your products or services from wherever they are and offer a prize to the pinner who lives farthest from your location.
A competition gives your customers a reason to share the product they bought from you. Not only will people see how popular your products are, each new pin increases your visibility.

How to Use Pinterest Rich Pins: What Marketers Need to Know

Pinterest is continuously expanding their functionality for businesses, from creating business accounts to marketing materials to help businesses get more from Pinterest.
The latest additions to Pinterest are the introduction of rich pins to include more information about pinned images and the integration of the Pin It button with mobile apps.
There are three types of pins that now allow you to share more information: products, recipes, and movies. The additional information for pins in these categories is provided by specific websites.
For example, major brands whose product pins have extended information include AnthropologieHome DepotNordstromOverstockREISephoraSonyTarget and Walmart.

The difference between an enhanced (Rich) product pin and a regular pin of a product is the enhanced pin shows current pricing details and has a direct link to the product page. Regular pins require the user to enter the price (which can only be updated by the user) and the link only pops up when someone hovers over the image.

Links on regular pins only show up when you hover over the image.
Rich product pins also stand out when people are searching for things on Pinterest. You can see in the following example how sales could be achieved by simply having your store link on the product itself.

Product pins are not just limited to major brands and businesses. If you have a small business that sells products on Etsy or eBay, then your product pins will have enhanced details as well.

Small business owners with stores built with the Shopify platform will be able to configure their site for rich pin functionality. And unlike the pins from Etsy and eBay, pins from your Shopify store will lead Pinterest users back to your website.

As an added bonus, to the right of the product pin, you’ll also see other pins from the same domain, whether it is from Etsy or your own online store.

Rich pin formats also include recipes. Recipes pinned from sites like Better Homes and GardensGood HousekeepingMartha Stewart LivingWhole Foods MarketWoman’s Day, and other similar sites will take food pinning to a new level with parts of the recipe included with the yummy food image.

Recipe pins would be great to drive traffic to any business in the food industry, such as restaurants sharing some of their top culinary secrets!
Last, but not least, businesses in the movie industry will love the functionality of rich pins for movies. Images shared from FlixsterNetflix and Rotten Tomatoes will include additional details about films including ratings, the director and the main stars.

Why Rich Pins Are So Valuable

Curious as to why you should care about the latest evolution in Pinterest pins? Here are some studies that should get you excited about what these rich pins can do for your business.
  • In May 2012, Shopify did a study that showed an average sales order of $80 from Pinterest referral traffic, compared to $40 from Facebook referral traffic. Pins with prices were also 16% more likely to get likes than those without.
  • In February 2013, Sephora found that Pinterest users spent 15 times more than Facebook users.
  • In February 2013, Business Insider noted that Pinterest now has 25 million users, many of whom are wealthy young females who love to shop.
The best part is that all of these studies were done before the introduction of rich pins, which makes it easy to assume that having additional information on pins will further increase these stats. If nothing else, they should certainly help increase traffic to the source domains of the images.

How to Get Rich Pins

If you would like Pinterest users to start sharing your products, recipes and movies with rich pins, you can make it happen! Pinterest has a developer’s page that covers the process by which you can enhance your own website with rich pins.
First, you’ll have to implement specific markup code in your website’s backendusing oEmbed or Semantic Markup (Schema.org or Open Graph metatags). Once you have incorporated these into your website, you can validate your work using the rich pins validator.

Use the rich pins validator to test your markup code.
Once your code is validated, you can then apply for your rich pins to be accepted and used on Pinterest.
Encourage Your Customers to Share Your Images
Even if you haven’t set up your business’s online store for rich pin functionality, you should still keep encouraging people to pin your content as it is proven to help with traffic and sales. So how do you encourage people to pin your images?
Add the Pin It Button
By adding the Pin It button to your product pages, you will automatically encourage Pinterest users to pin your products. This also goes for images on your blog posts and other pages throughout your website. This means it’s essential to ensure that every page has a great image.
Add the Follow Button and Widgets
Show Pinterest users that your business is active in the Pinterest community by adding a Follow button to your website to encourage people to follow you. You can also add widgets for your profile and specific boards on your profile to show people your latest Pinterest activity. You can even put a Pin widget on your website tohighlight one of your latest pins, such as a product, recipe or film that you want others to repin.
Run a Contest
Pinterest is slowly adding to their contest rules and regulations, which can be found on their Brand Guidelines page. Some of the rules stipulate that you can’t suggest Pinterest is in any way associated with your contest, require people to pin specific images, make people pin or repin your contest page or rules, count Pinterest activity (pinning, following or liking) as entries or count Pinterest activity as votes.
That said, you can run contests where you ask participants to pin their favorite images from your website. While you are still specifying they pin from your website, you aren’t telling them what to pin or repin—that’s the difference.
You can find some good examples and ideas of how to run Pinterest contests to increase the pins from your website on the PinLeague blog.

Draw Attention to Mobile Pinning

The Pin It button is making its way into mobile apps from North Facezulily and Etsy, and you can be sure that more of your customers will be thinking about pinning your products on their smartphones.

If you don’t have a mobile app for your business just yet, you can still encourage people to pin your images by adding the Pin It button to your business’ mobile website. When visitors click it, they will be taken to a mobile login page for Pinterest so they can keep sharing your products with their followers.
