Facebook still No.1 social network worldwide

Opera’s state of the mobile web report reveals that Facebook is the preferred global social network with Twitter following closely behind.

Opera took a look at five of the biggest social media networks globally and studied the number of Opera mini users that visited them.

While most countries usually have one dominating social network, the study found some countries where social-network diversity is more significant.

Countries like Israel, Latvia and Estonia were found to have the most diverse distribution of social networks.

Estonia, while it has a high representation of Facebook and Twitter, also uses Russian based social networks like Odnoklassniki and VKontakte.

However, Facebook still outperformed its competition, representing 30% of Estonian visits each month, followed by VKontakte with 18% and Odnoklassniki 7.8%.

Facebook

Asian countries topped the list of having the highest number of users accessing Facebook with Indonesia having the highest number of unique Facebook users on Opera Mini.

Surprisingly, Macao citizens were found to be the most active users on Facebook, percentage-wise. More than 90% of all opera mini users from Macao visit Facebook at least once a month.

Twitter's most active users were also from Asian countries with top countries being Indonesia, Paraguay, India and Japan.

Twitter

Weibo was found to be mostly used within China but also has some usage in east Asian countries and the Amercias.

While Facebook and Twitter were found to be the only social networks with true global representation, Odnoklassniki dominated in Russia and other CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries like Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Armenia.

The study suggests that the popularity of these Russian based social networks are inversely proportional to Twitter and Facebook, so dominating these countries may prove difficult for the U.S. based social networks.
