Who is the average Twitter user?

According to the latest social research, it’s an 18-29 year old minority woman who lives in an urban area. Overall, 16 percent of online Americans use Twitter, with the micro-blogging social network scoring favourably with women, Hispanics and African-American users.

Similar metrics are seen on Facebook and Instagram, while a Pinterest user is more likely to be a white female in a rural area. Indeed, women dominate social media across all the major platforms, with strong representation on Facebook and Instagram, too.

Using data compiled from the Pew Research Center’s recent social media survey, Docstoc have produced this infographic, which takes a closer look at the key demographics who using social media.
