10 Tips for Designing a Web Page That Looks Great and Ranks High

Here are some of the best SEO techniques for Web design that will maximize the impact of your website.

1. SEO-Friendly URL

You need to make sure that the URL of your site is SEO-friendly. Only use keywords that are relevant to your business and relate to it in some way. Avoid using long URLs, and if possible separate terms using hyphens. The URL should give people an idea about your business.

2. Optimized Images

To get a better rank in the search results, optimize your images along with the text on your website. Avoid using large images on your website. Keep the image size from 30 to 100 KB with a resolution of 72 dpi.
Large images make your site load slower. When you are creating an alt image text, make sure that you use keywords in graphics, header images, logo images, and buttons on each page.

3. Responsive Web Design

Designing for multiple devices, aka responsive design, is what Google recommends. This type of design allows your website to perform optimally on multiple devices. From an SEO perspective, a responsive website has a single URL for both the mobile and the main site, which means that you will have to drive links to a single URL instead of two. This is an easy way to increase your external backlink count.

4. Quick Navigation

When you design your website, make sure the navigation is not difficult. Let users experience an easier navigation when they land on your website so that they can easily find what they are looking for. Place the navigation bar either at the top or along the left margin of the page.

5. Be Careful With JavaScripts

When you are designing your website, make sure that you do not use JavaScripts for your entire site design. Search engines crawl through websites to index them, thus excessive use of JavaScripts will cause crawling issues.
Another disadvantage is that JavaScripts do not work smoothly on mobile devices. You need to make sure the website is simple and easy to read for both users and search engines.

6. Fast Page Load Time

Page load time is an important aspect from a website visitor's perspective. Consumers are busy and do not like waiting for a page to load. Mobile users on an average only wait for five seconds for the page to load, whereas desktop users wait only for three seconds for the page to load.
To reduce the page load time, make sure you are minimizing Javascripts, enabling compression, using small images, and browser caching.

Sitemaps have always been a part of best Web design practices. But, since the time when search engines first adopted sitemaps, they have become even more important. Wikimedia Blames ‘Right to Be Forgotten’ for Missing Links

In the wake of the "Right to be Forgotten" ruling in Europe, the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that operates online encyclopedia Wikipedia, says it has received multiple notices of intent to remove Wikipedia content from European search results.
In fact, in a blog post, Wikimedia says Google has received more than 91,000 removal requests involving more than 328,000 links as of July 18 and more than 50 percent of the URLs processed have been removed.
And, as of August 6, Wikimedia says the notices affect more than 50 links directing readers to Wikipedia sites.

Within some of the notices, Google assures Wikimedia that the pages on the list have not been blocked entirely and will continue to appear to individuals that are not included under the "European data protection law requests."
Wikimedia notes it only knows about these removals because the search engine company sent notices to Wikimedia and because there is no legal obligation to send such notices it is possible other search engines may have removed additional links without Wikimedia's knowledge.
In another post, Lila Tretikov, executive director of Wikimedia, says the organization will beposting notices for each indefinite removal of Wikipedia search results.
Wikimedia has made its opposition to the ruling clear. The post says the European court "abandoned its responsibility to protect one of the most important and universal rights: the right to seek, receive and impart information."
As a result, Wikimedia says, "accurate search results are vanishing in Europe with no public explanation, no real proof, no judicial review and no appeals process. The result is an internet riddled with memory holes -- places where inconvenient information simply disappears."
In comments on the Wikipedia blog, some Wikipedia contributors have expressed their own opposition to Wikimedia's stance.
"Once again, this is a decision that impacts the search engine algorithm which is not some impartial mathematical representation of the truth but is already heavily manipulated by many big commercial and state actors from around the world (from record labels to law enforcement)," writes one.
Another says Wikimedia's statement lacks the European perspective.
"This is by no means a sign of censorship, but rather one of compliance to European law," the commenter writes. "I would expect the Wikimedia Foundation to respect the law. Instead you announce that you have put up a pillory-style page you consider an act of transparency, listing all those cases that you have become aware of, which...runs the risk of being against the same said law. I think this is rather disappointing because it demonstrates the deep divide between the U.S. and Europe on these issues."

Google Analytics Helps You Filter Spider and Bot Traffic

Ever wonder how much of your traffic was actual human visitors and how much of your traffic was really scrapers, bots, and other web spiders? Google Analytics will now help you discern just that.
On their official Google+ page, the Google Analytics team has announced a new filter to help site owners identify "real" traffic from that of bots and other spiders.
By setting a checkbox in a filter, Google Analytics will filter out all the traffic from known bots. This list of known bots will be pulled from the IAB/ABC International spiders & Bots List, a list the Interactive Advertising Bureau has been maintaining since 2006. The list of spiders and bots typically costs $14,000, though IAB members receive a discount.

How to Filter Bots in Google Analytics

To filter bot and spider traffic from Google Analytics, go to your Admin settings. Under the Viewpanel, you'll find View Settings. Toward the bottom of the options, just before Site Search Settings, you'll find a small heading for Bot Filtering with a checkbox that reads: Exclude all hits from known bots and spiders. Check it, and you'll automatically filter the known bots and spiders from your Analytics collecting.

Because of how this is implemented (and the cost of the list of bots), you won't know which bots are actually hitting your site, nor will you be able to filter specific bots. But, by selecting to filter them out, you'll see a significant difference in your traffic patterns that just might help you better understand your website visitors.
Some numbers suggest that on average, over one-third of all web traffic to a given site is an automated bot. While the filters list is updated regularly, it can't possibly know about all the bots. You will still potentially have some bot traffic coming to your site.
If you enable the option to filter bots, you will very likely see a drop, possibly a significant drop, in traffic to your site, but your numbers will be more accurate for measuring.

Google Panda: Understanding the Technical Inner Workings

The concept of a search engine is very simple. Database the location of pages and return the most relevant results.
Primitive search engines only understood words on the pages in their database and returned pages that included those searched words. Google essentially came along with the ability to reorder those search results based on how many other pages on the Internet linked to them.
Since then Google and other search engines have improved these foundational ranking factors and developed thousands of ways to reorder search results so only the most relevant are displayed to the user. For example the "freshness" of content or the location of where the search took place.
Panda is just another way Google reorders results based on the quality of a site's content.
Throughout this article we speculate in detail what can be learned from the "Panda Patent". The verbiage used is often vague and sometimes makes it hard to retain meaning, so here's a quick concept breakdown that should help throughout.
  1. Panda refreshes gathered information about links and queries associated with a site.
  2. Upon a user search, each result listing (URL / Page) is given an initial score based on relevance to search and page quality.
  3. Calculations of #1 and #2 determine if the result listing (URL / Page) is above or below a threshold.
  4. Results are reordered by final values.

Looking Back and the New "Panda Rank"

Way back in February 2011, Google released a major change in how they order search results. In it they explain:
This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful.
They go on to say:
...it is important for high-quality sites to be rewarded, and that's exactly what this change does.

In summary, Google assigned each page eligible for search results a value that reordered search results for any particular query based on the quality of the group (for example, a site) the page was associated with. That's a jam-packed summary and seems complex to programmatically automate.
Danny Sullivan, founder of Search Engine Land, speaks to this in an article published four months after the introduction Panda, "Right now, it's too much computing power to be running this particular analysis of pages. Instead, Google runs the filter periodically to calculate the values it needs."
We've come to know what is described here as a refresh, marking the occasion of sites getting hit or released from the Panda threshold.
Note: (according to Google this has recently been integrated into their normal process, hence no more "refreshes").
Fast forward 3 years and more than 25 Panda updates when Bill Slawski discovered a patent that was granted with the name Navneet Panda, the Google Engineer who authored the Panda update. Bill notes that Panda, "...is aimed at improving search results rather than penalizing sites or identifying attempts to manipulate search results." This is a key differentiator when comparing Panda to other Google updates.
To help provide some context to the patent analysis below, we're going to call the new group based quality score Google created Panda Rank. In ode to how Google originally determined relevant pages for queries, PageRank.

As much as we can gather from the complexity of a patent, Panda in a most basic summary seems to have been a two-part process. For each URL eligible for a particular search query:
  • An initial score is generated – URL level, relevance to query, and/or quality score.
  • If applicable, group based modification factors were applied.

Initial Scoring

The first step in generating the Panda Rank was generating an initial score for every URL listingwithin the context of a particular query. The patent goes into more detail, "...a measure of the relevance of the resource (URL listing) to the search query, a measure of the quality of the resource (URL listing), or both."
STEP ONE: Given the search term, assign an initial value for all eligible URLs based on:
  • Relevance to query.
  • Quality measurement.
Initial Scoring Speculation and Summary
Initial scores were generated from factors that were not new. Panda is special because it was a feasible way to automate reordering search results based on group VS URL quality.

Group Based Modification Factor

Once an initial score has been generated for every URL for a given search query, that score is then modified based on the quality of the group the URL has been assigned.

A site is one type of group, Google refers to address-based groups several times throughout the patent but provides possibilities of what a group could be:
...a portion of the resources on the Internet. A group can be defined in any of a variety of ways. An address-based group of resources is a group of resources that is defined by the Internet addresses, e.g., Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), of the resources in the group. Resources are grouped so that a resource cannot be included in more than one group of resources. For example, a group of resources can include each resource that can be accessed using a particular domain name. That is, the group could include http://www.domain.com/resource1, http://wwww.domain.com/resource2, http://www.domain.com/resourceN, and so on, without regard to when the resources first become available to the search engine 130 for indexing. Alternatively, a group of resources can include each resource that can be accessed using a particular host name, e.g., http://host.example.com/resource1, http://host.example.com/resource2, http://host.example.com/resourceN, and so on. Other address-based groupings are possible. For example, a particular group can include only a portion of the resources that can be accessed using a particular host name or a particular domain name.
Patent speak likes to project that anything is possible, which makes sense for litigation purposes.
STEP TWO: Once an initial score is assigned for eligible URLs given a search term, modify the scores according to the quality of the groups to which they are associated. For all URLs in a group, quality score is based on identifying a count of:
  • Reference queries.
  • Independent links.

A reference query is when a searcher uses a search query to find a specific URL.
Note: More detail is provided about reference queries in the Panda Flow and Speculation Summary below.

Independent links are especially "vetted" links pointing to a URL.

Panda took initial URL level relevance and quality scores and modified them according to a group based factor looking at reference queries and independent links.

  • Generate initial scores for all eligible URL listings for a given search query.
  • Determine if query is navigational, if so leave initial score alone.
  • If the initial score of the URL is below the group quality score threshold, modify initial score.
  • Repeat.
Note: In the actual patent, they seem to refer to a URL as a "resource".

The Panda Flow Speculation and Summary
One confusing aspect of the Panda flow is what the difference between navigational and reference queries might be. We think that navigational queries may have something indicating the brand name within the query itself.
Something like searching [nike shoes on zappos] might be considered a navigational query. Reference queries might be based on timing. If someone uses a search and clicks a link within a certain time frame it could be flagged as a "reference query.
Another interesting aspect to this flow to consider is the possibility of multiple thresholds. It makes sense that Google wants a quality factor based on site or group of URLs and found that with Panda, but having multiple thresholds could have different outcomes. A URL listing for a given search query could be:
  • Negatively impacted by multiple group score factor.
  • Negatively impacted by one group score factor and positively impacted by others.
  • Positively impacted by multiple group score factors.
The patent does state, "Resources are grouped so that a resource cannot be included in more than one group of resources."
Despite this being outright stated, one thought is that a URL could have modification factors applied based on both address and non-address based groups.
Google could set the address based modification factor to have more of an impact on a URL thannon-address based groups. Effectively demoting URL / pages that have internal duplication issues to a higher degree versus URLs / pages with external duplication issues.
Along the same line of thought, if a page has both internal and external group quality issues, it could be negatively impacted twice.

Panda Today and Ranking Factors to Consider

Without thinking about the details, one thing we can agree on is that site and group based quality scores are a ranking factor in Google search results today. No doubt things have changed since this patent was written, but it does seem to provide some valuable insight in how to think about and how to avoid and overcome Google's Panda.
As it is described in the patent, URLs are given a unique score that is modified according to any query searched. Furthermore, that modification factor is dynamic depending on ever changing variables. That translates to Panda having a different impact on every URL. That makes for hard quantification, but there are factors that have been discussed in detail above to consider further incorporating into best practices:

The Challenge Of Getting Mobile SEO Right When Google Is Inconsistent

There have been some major announcements from Google recently that seem to skew heavily toward the mobile side of the house — things like the new Hummingbird algorithm update(which clearly has deep ties to voice search queries that can be submitted from mobile devices); the recent re-launch of the Google PageSpeed Tool with mobile-specific page analysis; changes to Google mobile SERP layout; and the recent official inclusion of load-time in the mobile search algorithm or yesterday morning’s announcement about cross-device conversion metrics in AdWords.
Google has been steering webmasters toward Responsive Design for just over a year, but has generally included additional information about what webmasters could do if they already had a mobile-specific site (mDOT pages on a mobile subdomain, for example m.site.com). This was not the case today; the phrases “rel=canonical” and “rel=alternate” were not mentioned once in this mobile SEO session.

How to Build an Analytics Package to Measure Off-Site Content Distribution

Marketers and advertisers have been spoiled in the cloud-based world we now call home. Data is seemingly ever present and infinitely divisible into segments that allow for minute-by-minute reactions to advertising and marketing campaigns.
Because of this we define "analytics" as the software that gives us this insight, however true analytics is the system by which we measure any data or statistics. By this definition analytics have been the core of modern advertising as early as we could quantify audience numbers of media.
As content marketing evolves as a practice, one area current analytics packages often fail – and thus leave marketers wondering about ROI – is in regards to content based activities that take place off of a company's website. Whether it is a publisher, social network, or social curation platform, marketers have a hard time figuring out how to grade performance in a seeming black hole of data.
The following tips give a good framework for how marketers and advertisers can build their own analytics solution internally.

Step 1: Measuring on Social Networks

This one isn't as straightforward as you would hope. Some of the issues that arise in documenting content spread effectively on social network are:
  • People taking images and uploading them directly to the network.
  • People augmenting the URL of the content.
This renders the open APIs that networks such as Facebook and Twitter have pretty ineffective when it comes to these specific issues. However, the basic URL data should be enough to allow marketers and advertisers to easily pull information about their campaign.
You can actually create a pretty basic version of a tracking software using Google Spreadsheets.
  • Create a Google Spreadsheet and add the content you want to monitor
  • Open the Script Editor

This basic tool can be very helpful when you are dealing with publishers that don't have widgets that track such stats, or a large amount of content outreach going on.

Step 2: Monitoring Publishers

This one is tough. Most publishers aren't going to give you analytics access to measure your performance. But all the information you need is at your fingertips if you are inventive.
First let's think about the metrics that are going to be most important to us as marketers:
  • Overall visitors.
  • Time on page.
There are a few ways to handle this. Each will depend on your relationship with the publisher.
For new relationships where the publisher is very particular about what they will put on their website, you can utilize a system like Compete to give you basic visitor metrics for the website, and break that number across the number of new pages. This is a pretty flawed concept, but it gives you a general idea of what is going on traffic wise. You can also back this out using click-throughs from the content to see if it matches other sources you have better data on.
For relationships you have established, a JavaScript wrapper or basic pixel in the content can give you a ton of data on the page level. We have chosen to build a standardized, secure JavaScript widget to use with our publishers.
With the JavaScript option you can easily monitor any statistics any other analytics software would monitor, and you can easily utilize such a system to make on the fly changes to content. This is also something our system allows for.
The main issue is trust. If you're going to be sneaky with such a widget and try to spam your publisher base or not let them know ahead of time, you could be in for an earful. And rightfully so.

Step 3: Monitoring Impact

Referral data can still be difficult in either scenario above, and furthermore referrals can have larger impacts than direct traffic. The links that drive that traffic are the links that drive SEO value as well.
The last piece of a makeshift analytics package to monitor content marketing would need to be Majestic SEO. For my money, it doesn't get any better than Majestic's ability to update links quickly, and let you know the content that is working and what it is yielding.
This ability really replaces the ability marketers lost with the closing of Yahoo's Site Explorer.

Through the steps above you can close the gap on analytics needed to guide your online content marketing. Some of the techniques discussed are less exact than others, but they do address the current black hole most marketers face in a way that can at least justify budgets, gauge ROI, and chart progress.
