60 Sensational Social Media Facts and Statistics on Twitter in 2013

60 Sensational Social Media Facts and Statistics on Twitter in 2013

Social media facts and statistics are often pieced together from sites that seem credible but sometimes they leave a lingering doubt. Is it smoke, mirrors or is it a fact? Stating it can be easy but verifying it can be almost impossible.
As they say… “there are damned lies and then there are statistics“.
When you are raising $1 billion in a public float, the numbers are under the microscope. The government is glancing over your shoulder and the investors are casting a withering eye and wanting a return. You are moving from private to public and that can be unforgiving. Just ask Facebook’s executives after they went public last year.
Twitter is floating part of its business to raise capital as it seeks to continue growing on a web that doesn’t like downward subscriber and revenue trajectories.

What has Twitter revealed?

Here are some of the numbers that were part of the 800 page filing for the Twitter IPO.
  1. In 2010 Twitter’s revenue was $28 million
  2. Last year (2012) Twitter achieved sales of $317 million
  3. The first half of this year saw revenue of $254 million
  4. If this rate of growth continues it will exceed $656 million for the full year
  5. 87 percent of revenue is from advertising
  6. Twitter currently has 218 million active monthly users
  7. 169 million of users are are outside the USA
  8. Twitter has never made a profit
  9. It has lost an accumulated $419 million since launch
  10. Private investors have put a total of $759 million into the social networks coffers
  11. Twitter has $375 million cash in the bank
  12. Twitter has generated 64 cents per user in the last 3 months.(Meanwhile in the same period Facebook created $1.58 per user and LinkedIn a $1.53)
  13. Twitter is mobile centric and 65% of its advertising earnings are from ads on tablets and smartphones
  14. There are 2,000 employees
  15.  Market value on floating is predicted to be as high as $20 billion
So they are the numbers for the float. What are some other interesting social media facts and statistics about Twitter?

Six Steps To Mastering Online Stats

Stats can become a very useful tool, if used properly and not abused. That goes for marketing as much as it applies to golf. Here’s six ways you can begin to leverage stats to improve your marketing and communications, both offline and online.
  1. Get the numbers: To analyze stats, you need stats. Don’t overthink this part: Start with Google Analytics. You can figure out later how to dive deeper into the right numbers for you and which stats to ignore.
  2. Pick one metric: Once you have a clear goal for your website, find one metric that drives revenue and focus your energy on improving that measure. (For schools, I’d recommend monitoring the amount of time visitors spend on the website — which means you need great, layered content.)
  3. Use stats for leverage: Having stats to back your gut feelings can prove extremely powerful. If you doubt the effectiveness of a specific campaign, pick a metric and track it. If the number supports your theory, you can begin asking a lot of tough questions.
  4. Analyze for improvement, not justification: At too many conferences, I have listened to questions from attendees that begin with “my boss wants proof.” Using stats for defense may save your job now, but they don’t help your marketing efforts in the long run.
  5. Makes stats a habit, not an obsession: You need to check stats regularly, be it daily (recommended) or weekly (at minimum). If you only watch a couple of metrics and only truly care about one, you won’t spend an inordinate amount of time on stats.
  6. Ignore the score: The only stat that matters for most golfers is the final score. Bosses or clients, meanwhile, will often only care about final numbers for sales, enrollment or otherwise.Your stats, however, should explain positive and negative results, not simply be the results. Even more important, an effective use of stats will often identify a potential problem before it impacts the final score.

How Are We Using Social Media? [INFOGRAPHIC]

Did you know that between 2011 and 2012, time spent on social media increased by some 30 billion minutes, representing a year-on-year increase of 37 percent?
But, according to one study, while Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest remain popular with users aged 30 and over, it’s the formerly niche social platforms such as Reddit, Github and DeviantArt that can boast the highest representation amongst the important 18-29 demographic.
Digital agency iAcquire partnered with SurveyMonkey to track the behaviour of social media users, presenting their key findings in the infographic below.

11 Shocking New Social Media Statistics in America

You think social media is reaching maturity, and the whipsaw behavioral shifts that change like a Dwight Howard trade request are things of the past? Uhhh, no. Released yesterday at Blogworld New York, findings from social media behavioral researcher Tom Webster and the team at Edison Research show some shocking changes in how Americans use and consume social media.

Here are 11 Shocking Social Media Statistics:

1. Twitter users are 33% more likely to be Democrats

Social Media Statistics Twitter Users Lean Towards teh Democratic Party 11 Shocking New Social Media Statistics in America
An interesting finding, and representative of the type of custom queries we can answer for you in the next round of the Social Habit, this edition found that 40% of Twitter users are Democrats, compared to 30% of the U.S. population overall. The percentage of Republications and Independents on Twitter mirrors the U.S. average almost precisely.

2. The “Check-in” is the phenomenon that never happened

74% of Americans are unfamiliar with the concept of checking in to a location via mobile device, and only 3% have ever checked in. Even more damning, is that 4% had checked in when surveyed in 2011. This is a 25% decrease in check in behaviors in a single year. It’s not going to rebound, which is why Foursquare’s play is to be the new Yelp.

3. Only 33% of Americans have ever followed a brand in social media

From 2010 to 2012 the percentage of Americans following any brand on a social network has gone from 16% to 33%. This is a sharp increase, but looked at from the opposite perspective, it’s shocking to me that 2/3 of Americans using social networks have never followed a brand.Companies still have substantial room for growth in connecting with customers and fans on social networks.

4. 56% of Americans have a profile on a social networking site

This is up from 52% just last year, and 48% in 2010. How high can this climb? Certainly, there are sizable chunks of the populace that will never join a social networking site, but it’s amazing to consider that significantly more Americans (12 years old and up) have a social networking profile than do not.

5. 55% of Americans 45-54 have a profile on a social networking site

Social Media Statistics 45 to 54 year old users 11 Shocking New Social Media Statistics in America

It’s not just for kids any more. The biggest growth of any age cohort from 2011 to 2012 was 45-54 year olds, who now exhibit participation matching the U.S. average. The only group that is below average are 55+ Americans, and even 3 out of 10 of them are in the social networking game.

6. 22% of Americans use social networking sites several times per day

It really is a “Social Habit”. In the past year, 12 million more Americans are using social networking many times daily. How many other things do we do several times per day? It’s not a long list.

7. Huge uptick in Facebook’s influence on purchase

Last year, 68% of Americans using social networks said that none of those networks had an influence on their buying decisions. This year, just 36% said that there was no influence. Now, 47% say Facebook has the greatest impact on purchase behavior(compared to just 24% in 2011). Incidentally, Twitter ranks below “other” at 5%. If you want to drive purchase behaviors within social networks, Facebook is the one and only game to play, statistically speaking.

8. Facebook via mobile continues to be a major factor

54% of Facebook members have used the social network via a phone, and 33% use a phone as their primary way to access Facebook. This despite the fact that the Facebook mobile experience and mobile apps are mediocre, at best. Here’s hoping the Instagram guys can jump start it. If so, watch for these numbers to soar.

9. Facebook is the most addicting of the social networks

23% of Facebook’s users check their account five or more times EVERY DAY. The mean number of daily look-ins by Facebook users is 4. Are we really so interesting that we have to keep up with our friends’ inanities every 90 minutes? Evidently, yes.

10. Twitter will have an easier time making changes to its core service that Facebook does.

53% of Twitter users have been a member form less than a year, compared to just 19% for Facebook. This means that Twitter’s user base doesn’t have long-term, deep seated expectations for what Twitter is or should be. It will be interesting to see if Twitter doubles down on this advantage, and continues to hang ornaments on the functionality Christmas tree.

11. 76% of Twitter users now post status updates

This is one of the biggest behavioral changes of the past two years. In 2010, the Social Habit research found that just 47% of Twitter users actually sent tweets, with more than half the user base in listen-only mode. The overwhelming majority of new Twitter users are active tweeters, driving the overall average to 76%.   In the next edition of The Social Habit, we’ll be looking at YouTube, social video, Pinterest, Instagram, and more.
